Summer last year my friend approached me with an idea for a Youtube channel, delving into the lore of various franchises and films. As my favourite literary world is Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I immediately set about diving into the deep lore of “The Silmarillion” and “Unfinished Tales” searching for topics to explore. A character that has always sparked my interest is Ungoliant, The Black Spider, Mother of Shelob (whom we encounter in Lord of the Rings) and servant of The Dark Lord Morgoth, but her origins are left incredibly vague throughout Tolkien’s published work and his various letters and notes. I decided to write a script looking into these scattered quotes and see if I could summarise some of the more popular theories about this enigmatic spirit’s origins. i took to reddit and youtube searching for posts and videos on the subject and gathered points and evidence from the texts themselves as well as supplementary material by other authors to back up my claims and ideas before organising them into a final script. We have a few scripts and voice/video recordings done already, and i’m sure they’ll find their way here at somepoint this year when we begin work properly on the youtube channel
